传说这是药师如来化身的白猿所发现的温泉，自古以来以风湿病与神经痛的疗养效果极佳的温泉疗养处而闻名。在江户时代，与长门汤本温泉一样是藩主也特地造访的著名疗养温泉。

碱性单纯温泉 : PH9.8 无色透明、无味、微具硫磺气味
功效 : 风湿病、神经痛、肌肉酸痛、关节疼痛、消除疲劳、增进健康等
特色 : 水中富含氢元素，具有很强的还原性，可有效缓解风湿病与神经痛。

至今仍保留着以往的浓浓的温泉疗养地风情，几乎所有旅馆都没有内设温泉，因而穿着浴衣的住宿旅客踩着木屐嘎达嘎达前往公共浴场的情境也别有一番风情。

温泉水中含有高浓度的氢，具有很强的还原性（抗氧化作用），这样的水质据称对风湿病、神经痛、预防生活习惯病及抗衰老均有疗效。温泉水粘滑，令入浴后的肌肤水润柔嫩。
