Akasaki Shrine

Genre : Temples et sanctuaires

Area : Région de Fukawa-Yumoto

The traditional Akasaki Festival has been held at this shrine since the Momoyama Period (1573-1600), shortly before Japan was unified under its first shogunate.

The northwest portion of the shrine grounds include a naturally-formed bowl-shaped amphitheater, the Akasaki Gallery. The amphitheater is used for performances, and is a nationally-designated Important Tangible Cultural Property. Among the events held here is the 400 year-old Akasaki Festival. These traditional festivities began in the year 1596, when a bovine disease epidemic had struck the area. When the village people prayed to the guardian deity of Akasaki Shrine, a god of agriculture, the epidemic dissipated, and in a show of gratefulness, it is said that the villagers held performances of dances and other arts.
