Nagato is home to five different hot springs, each with different properties, not least of which are Nagato Yumoto and Tawarayama Onsen.
The oldest onsen in Yamaguchi Prefecture, with a history of over 600 years, stretching back even to the Muromachi Period (1336-1573).
In the spring of 2020, it was remade into an onsen town perfect for relaxing strolls.
The streets of this secluded mountain onsen have the feeling of days past, and its baths have long been cherished for their healing benefits for nerve and joint pain. Today, they are frequented by visitors in cotton yukata kimono, their wooden clogs clinking pleasantly along the street to the baths.
In nationwide polling, Yuyawan Onsen was voted Japan's best hot spring for beautifying the skin. From its elevated outdoor bath, the view of the sunset over Yuya Bay is unforgettable, too.
