Yasaka Shrine (Gion Shrine)

Genre : Shrines & Temples

Area : Senzaki

Yasaka Shrine was often described with fondness in the poems of Misuzu Kaneko, to whom the Senzaki Area was home.

Known honorifically as "Gion-sama," this shrine holds gifts from medieval Japanese ruler Yoshitaka Ouichi, including Noh theater masks and paintings of ancient whaling traditions.
Each July, during the Gion Festival, floats carrying dancers and traditional music troops will parade through the town, giving a distinctly retro feeling that blurs the lines between past and present.
