Yuya Terraced Rice Fields

Genre : Natural Wonders

Area : Yuya & Heki AREA

The Yuya Terraced Rice Fields are nationally reknowned for their magical scenery on evenings when the sunset lights up Yuya Bay. The fishing lights of squid boats glisten in the twilight across the water's mirror-like surface.
"Terraced" rice fields are water-filled rice paddies constructed in graduated steps, or terraces, along a steep hillside.
Along the Mukatsuku Peninsula in Nagato, an enormous area of terraced rice fields covers an area of nearly 700 hectares.

Each year from late April to June, the fishing lights and the reflection of the sunset in the glassy, water-filled terraces makes for a spectacular view.

For photographers:
・On Saturday evenings and days when the weather is poor, few fishermen will venture out on the bay, and as a result, fishing lights may be few.
・More fishing lights will begin to be visible beginning in mid-May.
・Some paddies may not be filled with water.
・Rice shoots will begin to grow in June, which will affect the reflective qualities of the water in the paddies.
・After September, fishing activities will begin to shift into the open sea, and fishing lights in the bay will diminish.

Motonosumi Shrine is located nearby, and both are easily accessible on the same day.
