Tateishi Kannon

Genre : Temples et sanctuaires

Area : Yuya & Heki

This pair of great rocks extends into Tateishi Fishing Harbor nearly 20 meters, at a height of almost 41.

The impressive structure of this pair of rocks faces the rough waves of the Sea of Japan from Tateishi Fishing Harbor, and is said to be only one of a few pairs of such great rock pairs in Japan.
On the summit is enshrined a wooden sculpture of the bodhisattva Kannon, ornamented with gold leaf. The shrine serves as a visual reminder of the intense faith of the simple coast peoples, as it is said to be a relic passed on after the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637.
