Mara Kannon

Genre : Temples et sanctuaires

Area : Tawarayama

This shrine is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and is often visited by pilgrims praying for fertility and health.

During the Warring States Period (1467-1603), a military uprising against former ruler Yoshitaka Ouchi forced him to commit ritual suicide, and his orphaned son into hiding, disguised as a girl. His son, however, was discovered and slain, his penis severed to prove that he was a boy, the son of Ouchi. Out of compassion for the boy's cruel fate, the local villagers erected this shrine to comfort his spirit.
Today, this wayside shrine is surrounded by numerous large phalluses, and is visited by those praying for fertility, vitality, and success in love and marriage.
A rub, is it said, will increase the blessings of pilgrims.
